Suffolk, October 2021 – Award-winning developer Countryside has launched an Uber taxi-style bus service for residents living at its Marham Park development in Bury St Edmunds.
Believed to be the first of its kind in the area, The Marham Park Flyer is an on-demand daily bus service, transporting residents from the development to destinations within Bury St Edmunds.
This could include locations such as the town centre, the railway station, schools, as well as an individual location of choice within the wider Bury St Edmunds area. The service simply drops and collect residents from the closest bus stop available.
The service, which runs via an app that can be downloaded on to a smart mobile phone, allows passengers to book a collection from a dedicated pick up point on the development or at drop off points between 6am to 9pm, Mondays to Saturdays.
The Flyer aims to guarantee a collection within 30 minutes, while a trip to a town centre destination will take no longer than 15 minutes and pick up no more than four passengers at any one time.
The service means that users benefit from the added convenience of ordering their transport when ready and knowing when the bus will arrive. Users can track the service through the app but also receive a text message informing them their bus is closeby.
On behalf of Countryside, the Flyer is operated by The Voluntary Network.
Martin Leach, Managing Director of Strategic Land at Countryside, comments:
“After extensive trailling, we are delighted to launch the Marham Park Flyer and offer residents the option of leaving their cars behind to jump on a regular bus service to reach the array of amenities in Bury St Edmunds. This Uber-style service will offer residents extra convenience and peace of mind, knowing that their bus home is on its way, all without having to experience long waiting times at bus stops.”
Ian Mitchell, Head of Strategic Projects, Mayer Brown Ltd, said: “We have been very pleased to help Coutryside set up this service. It sits halfway between being a bus and a taxi, and the fact that residents can make direct journeys, for example from Marham Park to the hospital with at most two or three stops on route, adds to its appeal.”
Marham Park is Countryside’s major new village- style development on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds spanning 200 acres. The development is a new community that will eventually provide around 1,000 new homes supported by local amenities, along with over 65-acres of parkland and open spaces, all of which are connected by a network of new footpaths and cycle ways.
To date over 525 new homes, along with the Marham Care Home, have been built and occupied, together with a variety of play areas and a new 35-acre country park, specifically designed to encourage biodiversity and provide new habitats and homes for wildlife to thrive. The new homes at Marham Park are making a significant contribution toward the growing housing demands in the local area and are available via a mix of tenure including 30% affordable.
Bus service fares start from £1.75 for a child, up to £2.50 for adults.
